Carrara is the city of marble, famous worldwide. It's not a village: it's an industrial and artistic city, with an elegant historic centre and the white marble quarries in the mountains. About 45 minutes from Camporaghena.

What it is and why go
Carrara is marble. The quarries in the Apuan Alps are a unique landscape: white mountains cut into terraces, yielding the stone that built churches, palaces and statues around the world. You can visit the quarries by jeep or off-road vehicle, enter the tunnels, and watch the quarry workers in action.
The historic centre is elegant: marble squares, noble palaces, the Academy of Fine Arts where sculptors from all over the world study. There's also a lovely seafront at Marina di Carrara, 10 minutes from the centre.
It's a day trip. Visit the quarries in the morning, have lunch in the centre, and in the afternoon take a stroll along the seafront or explore the historic centre.
