What it is and why go

Pontremoli is the most important town in Lunigiana. It lies at the crossroads of Tuscany, Emilia and Liguria, along the Via Francigena. It's a place that deserves a full day: castle, museum, historic centre, bookshops, restaurants.

The Castello del Piagnaro overlooks the town from above and houses the Museum of Statue Stele, the most important collection of these mysterious prehistoric sculptures (3,000–5,000 years old). If you're interested in ancient history, it's a must-see.
